56f99bcb52 swsusp: free more memory
Move the definition of PAGES_FOR_IO to kernel/power/power.h and introduce
SPARE_PAGES representing the number of pages that should be freed by the
swsusp's memory shrinker in addition to PAGES_FOR_IO so that device drivers
can allocate some memory (up to 1 MB total) in their .suspend() routines
without causing the suspend to fail.

a7ee2e5f5b kconfig: mention 'hibernation' not just swsusp
Clarify that "software suspend" is what's called "hibernation" in most user
interfaces, shrinking a terminology gap. (Examples include Gnome and
MS-Windows.)

Also provide a more succinct description of what it does, so you won't have
to read the whole novel in Kconfig; and highlights just why the lack of
BIOS requirements for swsusp are a big deal.

ab3bfca7ab remove software_suspend()
Remove software_suspend() and all its users since
pm_suspend(PM_SUSPEND_DISK) should be equivalent and there's no point in
having two interfaces for the same thing.

The patch also changes the valid_state function to return 0 (false) for
PM_SUSPEND_DISK when SOFTWARE_SUSPEND is not configured instead of
accepting it and having the whole thing fail later.

d1d241cc2c swsusp: use rbtree for tracking allocated swap
Make swsusp use extents instead of a bitmap to trace swap pages allocated
for saving the image (the tracking is only needed in case there's an error,

74dfd666de swsusp: do not use page flags
Make swsusp use memory bitmaps instead of page flags for marking 'nosave' and
free pages. This allows us to 'recycle' two page flags that can be used for
other purposes. Also, the memory needed to store the bitmaps is allocated
when necessary (ie. before the suspend) and freed after the resume which is
more reasonable.

The patch is designed to minimize the amount of changes and there are some
nice simplifications and optimizations possible on top of it. I am going to
implement them separately in the future.

1b29c1643c [PATCH] x86-64: do not use virt_to_page on kernel data address
o virt_to_page() call should be used on kernel linear addresses and not
on kernel text and data addresses. Swsusp code uses it on kernel data

o Allocate swsusp_header dynamically so that virt_to_page() can be used
  safely.

o I am changing this because in next few patches, __pa() on x86_64 will
no longer support kernel text and data addresses and hibernation breaks.

49c3df6aaa [PATCH] x86: Move swsusp __pa() dependent code to arch portion
o __pa() should be used only on kernel linearly mapped virtual addresses
and not on kernel text and data addresses.

o Hibernation code needs to determine the physical address associated
with kernel symbol to mark a section boundary which contains pages which
don't have to be saved and restored during hibernate/resume operation.

o Move this piece of code in arch dependent section. So that architectures
which don't have kernel text/data mapped into kernel linearly mapped
region can come up with their own ways of determining physical addresses
  associated with a kernel text.

9684e51cd1 power management: force pm_ops.valid callback to be assigned
This patch changes the docs and behaviour from "all states valid" to "no
states valid" if no .valid callback is assigned. Users of pm_ops that only
need mem sleep can assign pm_valid_only_mem without any overhead, others
will require more elaborate callbacks.

Now that all users of pm_ops have a .valid callback this is a safe thing to
do and prevents things from getting messy again as they were before.

e8c9c50269 power management: implement pm_ops.valid for everybody
Almost all users of pm_ops only support mem sleep, don't check in .valid and
don't reject any others in .prepare so users can be confused if they check
/sys/power/state, especially when new states are added (these would then
result in s-t-r although they're supposed to be something different).

This patch implements a generic pm_valid_only_mem function that is then
exported for users and puts it to use in almost all existing pm_ops.

fe0c935a6c rework pm_ops pm_disk_mode, kill misuse
This patch series cleans up some misconceptions about pm_ops. Some users of
the pm_ops structure attempt to use it to stop the user from entering suspend
to disk, this, however, is not possible since the user can always use
"shutdown" in /sys/power/disk and then the pm_ops are never invoked. Also,
platforms that don't support suspend to disk simply should not allow
configuring SOFTWARE_SUSPEND (read the help text on it, it only selects
suspend to disk and nothing else, all the other stuff depends on PM).

The pm_ops structure is actually intended to provide a way to enter
platform-defined sleep states (currently supported states are "standby" and
"mem" (suspend to ram)) and additionally (if SOFTWARE_SUSPEND is configured)
allows a platform to support a platform specific way to enter low-power mode
once everything has been saved to disk. This is currently only used by ACPI
(S4).

This patch:

The pm_ops.pm_disk_mode is used in totally bogus ways since nobody really
seems to understand what it actually does.

This patch clarifies the pm_disk_mode description.

It also removes all the arm and sh users that think they can veto suspend to
disk via pm_ops; not so since the user can always do echo shutdown >
/sys/power/disk, they need to find a better way involving Kconfig or such.

ACPI is the only user left with a non-zero pm_disk_mode.

The patch also sets the default mode to shutdown again, but when a new pm_ops
is registered its pm_disk_mode is selected as default, that way the default
stays for ACPI where it is apparently required.

436ce71638 [PATCH] Revert "swsusp: disable nonboot CPUs before entering platform suspend"
This reverts commit 94985134b7 and
insteads removes the WARN_ON() that caused that commit in the first
place.

The problem is that we call disable_nonboot_cpus() in swsusp before
powering down the system in order to avoid triggering the WARN_ON()
in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:init_low_mapping() and this doesn't
work well on Thomas' system.

So instead, remove the WARN_ON() in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:
init_low_mapping(), which triggers every time during the suspend to disk
in the platform mode, as the potential problem it is related to doesn't
seem to occur in practice.

[ I think we might want to disallow the case of multiple users of that
mm, or something. Normally, playing with the current process page
tables on the current CPU should be fine as long as we don't have
other threads using those tables at the same time..

2b5b09b3b5 [PATCH] swsusp: Change pm_ops handling by userland interface
Make the userland interface of swsusp call pm_ops->finish() after
enable_nonboot_cpus() and before resume_device(), as indicated by the recent
discussion on Linux-PM (cf.
http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html).

This patch changes the SNAPSHOT_PMOPS ioctl so that its first function,
PMOPS_PREPARE, only sets a switch turning the platform suspend mode on, and
its last function, PMOPS_FINISH, only checks if the platform mode is enabled.
This should allow the older userland tools to work with new kernels without
any modifications.

The changes here only affect the userland interface of swsusp.

259130526c [PATCH] swsusp: Change code ordering in user.c
Change the ordering of code in kernel/power/user.c so that device_suspend() is
called before disable_nonboot_cpus() and device_resume() is called after
enable_nonboot_cpus(). This is needed to make the userland suspend call
pm_ops->finish() after enable_nonboot_cpus() and before device_resume(), as
indicated by the recent discussion on Linux-PM (cf.
http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html).

The changes here only affect the userland interface of swsusp.

e3c7db621b [PATCH] PM: Change code ordering in main.c
As indicated in a recent thread on Linux-PM, it's necessary to call
pm_ops->finish() before devce_resume(), but enable_nonboot_cpus() has to be
called before pm_ops->finish() (cf.
http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html). For
consistency, it seems reasonable to call disable_nonboot_cpus() after
device_suspend().

This way the suspend code will remain symmetrical with respect to the resume
code and it may allow us to speed up things in the future by suspending and
resuming devices and/or saving the suspend image in many threads.

The following series of patches reorders the suspend and resume code so that
nonboot CPUs are disabled after devices have been suspended and enabled before
the devices are resumed. It also causes pm_ops->finish() to be called after
enable_nonboot_cpus() wherever necessary.

This patch:

Change the ordering of code in kernel/power/main.c so that device_suspend()
is called before disable_nonboot_cpus() and pm_ops->finish() is called after
enable_nonboot_cpus() and before device_resume(), as indicated by recent
discussion on Linux-PM
(cf. http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html).

8a102eed9c [PATCH] PM: Fix SMP races in the freezer
Currently, to tell a task that it should go to the refrigerator, we set the
PF_FREEZE flag for it and send a fake signal to it. Unfortunately there
are two SMP-related problems with this approach. First, a task running on
another CPU may be updating its flags while the freezer attempts to set
PF_FREEZE for it and this may leave the task's flags in an inconsistent
state. Second, there is a potential race between freeze_process() and
refrigerator() in which freeze_process() running on one CPU is reading a
task's PF_FREEZE flag while refrigerator() running on another CPU has just
set PF_FROZEN for the same task and attempts to reset PF_FREEZE for it. If
the refrigerator wins the race, freeze_process() will state that PF_FREEZE
hasn't been set for the task and will set it unnecessarily, so the task
will go to the refrigerator once again after it's been thawed.

To solve first of these problems we need to stop using PF_FREEZE to tell
tasks that they should go to the refrigerator. Instead, we can introduce a
special TIF_*** flag and use it for this purpose, since it is allowed to
change the other tasks' TIF_*** flags and there are special calls for it.

To avoid the freeze_process()-refrigerator() race we can make
freeze_process() to always check the task's PF_FROZEN flag after it's read
its "freeze" flag. We should also make sure that refrigerator() will
always reset the task's "freeze" flag after it's set PF_FROZEN for it.

3df494a32b [PATCH] PM: Fix freezing of stopped tasks
Currently, if a task is stopped (ie. it's in the TASK_STOPPED state), it
is considered by the freezer as unfreezeable. However, there may be a race
between the freezer and the delivery of the continuation signal to the task
resulting in the task running after we have finished freezing the other
tasks. This, in turn, may lead to undesirable effects up to and including
data corruption.

To prevent this from happening we first need to make the freezer consider
stopped tasks as freezeable. For this purpose we need to make freezeable()
stop returning 0 for these tasks and we need to force them to enter the
refrigerator. However, if there's no continuation signal in the meantime,
the stopped tasks should remain stopped after all processes have been
thawed, so we need to send an additional SIGSTOP to each of them before
waking it up.

Also, a stopped task that has just been woken up should first check if
there's a freezing request for it and go to the refrigerator if that's the
case.

8357376d3d [PATCH] swsusp: Improve handling of highmem
Currently swsusp saves the contents of highmem pages by copying them to the
normal zone which is quite inefficient (eg. it requires two normal pages
to be used for saving one highmem page). This may be improved by using
highmem for saving the contents of saveable highmem pages.

Namely, during the suspend phase of the suspend-resume cycle we try to
allocate as many free highmem pages as there are saveable highmem pages.
If there are not enough highmem image pages to store the contents of all of
the saveable highmem pages, some of them will be stored in the "normal"
memory. Next, we allocate as many free "normal" pages as needed to store
the (remaining) image data. We use a memory bitmap to mark the allocated
free pages (ie. highmem as well as "normal" image pages).

Now, we use another memory bitmap to mark all of the saveable pages
(highmem as well as "normal") and the contents of the saveable pages are
copied into the image pages. Then, the second bitmap is used to save the
pfns corresponding to the saveable pages and the first one is used to save
their data.

During the resume phase the pfns of the pages that were saveable during the
suspend are loaded from the image and used to mark the "unsafe" page
frames. Next, we try to allocate as many free highmem page frames as to
load all of the image data that had been in the highmem before the suspend
and we allocate so many free "normal" page frames that the total number of
allocated free pages (highmem and "normal") is equal to the size of the
image. While doing this we have to make sure that there will be some extra
free "normal" and "safe" page frames for two lists of PBEs constructed
later.

Now, the image data are loaded, if possible, into their "original" page
frames. The image data that cannot be written into their "original" page
frames are loaded into "safe" page frames and their "original" kernel
virtual addresses, as well as the addresses of the "safe" pages containing
their copies, are stored in one of two lists of PBEs.

One list of PBEs is for the copies of "normal" suspend pages (ie. "normal"
pages that were saveable during the suspend) and it is used in the same way
as previously (ie. by the architecture-dependent parts of swsusp). The
other list of PBEs is for the copies of highmem suspend pages. The pages
in this list are restored (in a reversible way) right before the
arch-dependent code is called.

This offset can be determined, for example, by an application using the FIBMAP
ioctl to obtain the swap header's block number for given file.

Make swsusp use block device offsets instead of swap offsets to identify swap

915bae9ebe [PATCH] swsusp: use partition device and offset to identify swap areas
The Linux kernel handles swap files almost in the same way as it handles swap
partitions and there are only two differences between these two types of swap
areas:

(1) swap files need not be contiguous,

(2) the header of a swap file is not in the first block of the partition
that holds it. From the swsusp's point of view (1) is not a problem,
because it is already taken care of by the swap-handling code, but (2) has
    to be taken into consideration.

In principle the location of a swap file's header may be determined with the
help of appropriate filesystem driver. Unfortunately, however, it requires
the filesystem holding the swap file to be mounted, and if this filesystem is
journaled, it cannot be mounted during a resume from disk. For this reason we
need some other means by which swap areas can be identified.

For example, to identify a swap area we can use the partition that holds the
area and the offset from the beginning of this partition at which the swap
header is located.

The following patch allows swsusp to identify swap areas this way. It changes
swap_type_of() so that it takes an additional argument representing an offset
of the swap header within the partition represented by its first argument.

Add an ioctl to the userspace swsusp code that enables the usage of the
pmops->prepare, pmops->enter and pmops->finish methods (the in-kernel

machines to (among others) speed up resuming by letting the BIOS skip some

It also ensures on many machines, that changed hardware (unplugged AC

65f27f3844 WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.

For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.

To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.

Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).

However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().

In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

9185cfa925 ACPI: S4: Use "platform" rather than "shutdown" mode by default
It has been reported that on some systems the functionality after a resume
from disk is limited if the system is simply powered off during the suspend
instead of using the ACPI S4 suspend (aka platform mode).

Unfortunately the default is currently to power off the system during the

if they don't switch to the platform mode explicitly. This patch makes swsusp
use the platform mode by default to avoid such situations.

7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

940864ddab [PATCH] swsusp: Use memory bitmaps during resume
Make swsusp use memory bitmaps to store its internal information during the
resume phase of the suspend-resume cycle.

If the pfns of saveable pages are saved during the suspend phase instead of
the kernel virtual addresses of these pages, we can use them during the resume
phase directly to set the corresponding bits in a memory bitmap. Then, this
bitmap is used to mark the page frames corresponding to the pages that were
saveable before the suspend (aka "unsafe" page frames).

Next, we allocate as many page frames as needed to store the entire suspend
image and make sure that there will be some extra free "safe" page frames for
the list of PBEs constructed later. Subsequently, the image is loaded and, if
possible, the data loaded from it are written into their "original" page
frames (ie. the ones they had occupied before the suspend).

The image data that cannot be written into their "original" page frames are
loaded into "safe" page frames and their "original" kernel virtual addresses,
as well as the addresses of the "safe" pages containing their copies, are
stored in a list of PBEs. Finally, the list of PBEs is used to copy the
remaining image data into their "original" page frames (this is done
atomically, by the architecture-dependent parts of swsusp).

b788db7989 [PATCH] swsusp: Introduce memory bitmaps
Introduce the memory bitmap data structure and make swsusp use in the suspend
phase.

The current swsusp's internal data structure is not very efficient from the
memory usage point of view, so it seems reasonable to replace it with a data
structure that will require less memory, such as a pair of bitmaps.

The idea is to use bitmaps that may be allocated as sets of individual pages,
so that we can avoid making allocations of order greater than 0. For this
reason the memory bitmap structure consists of several linked lists of objects
that contain pointers to memory pages with the actual bitmap data. Still, for
a typical system all of these lists fit in a single page, so it's reasonable
to introduce an additional mechanism allowing us to allocate all of them
efficiently without sacrificing the generality of the design. This is done
with the help of the chain_allocator structure and associated functions.

We need to use two memory bitmaps during the suspend phase of the
suspend-resume cycle. One of them is necessary for marking the saveable
pages, and the second is used to mark the pages in which to store the copies
of them (aka image pages).

First, the bitmaps are created and we allocate as many image pages as needed
(the corresponding bits in the second bitmap are set as soon as the pages are
allocated). Second, the bits corresponding to the saveable pages are set in
the first bitmap and the saveable pages are copied to the image pages.
Finally, the first bitmap is used to save the kernel virtual addresses of the
saveable pages and the second one is used to save the contents of the image
pages.

The current suspend code has to be run on one CPU, so we use the CPU

The functions disable_nonboot_cpus() and enable_nonboot_cpus() are moved to

better be static. Also it's better if disable_nonboot_cpus() returns an

a7ef7878ea [PATCH] Make suspend possible with a traced process at a breakpoint
It should be possible to suspend, either to RAM or to disk, if there's a
traced process that has just reached a breakpoint. However, this is a
special case, because its parent process might have been frozen already and
then we are unable to deliver the "freeze" signal to the traced process.
If this happens, it's better to cancel the freezing of the traced process.

968808b895 [PATCH] swsusp: use less memory during resume
Make swsusp allocate only as much memory as needed to store the image data
and metadata during resume.

Without this patch swsusp additionally allocates many page frames that will
conflict with the "original" locations of the image data and are considered
as "unsafe", treating them as "eaten" pages (ie. allocated but unusable).

The patch makes swsusp allocate as many pages as it'll need to store the
data read from the image in one shot, creating a list of allocated "safe"
pages, and use the observation that all pages allocated by it are marked
with the PG_nosave and PG_nosave_free flags set.   Namely, when it's about
to load an image page, swsusp can check whether the page frame
corresponding to the "original" location of this page has been allocated
(ie. if the page frame has the PG_nosave and PG_nosave_free flags set) and
if so, it can load the page directly into this page frame.   Otherwise it
uses an allocated "safe" page from the list to store the data that will be
copied to their "original" location later on.

This allows us to save many page copyings and page allocations during
resume and in the future it may allow us to load images greater than 50% of
the normal zone.

d6277db4ab [PATCH] swsusp: rework memory shrinker
Rework the swsusp's memory shrinker in the following way:

- Simplify balance_pgdat() by removing all of the swsusp-related code
  from it.

- Make shrink_all_memory() use shrink_slab() and a new function
  shrink_all_zones() which calls shrink_active_list() and
shrink_inactive_list() directly for each zone in a way that's optimized
  for suspend.

In shrink_all_memory() we try to free exactly as many pages as the caller
asks for, preferably in one shot, starting from easier targets.   If slab
caches are huge, they are most likely to have enough pages to reclaim.
The inactive lists are next (the zones with more inactive pages go first)
etc.

Each time shrink_all_memory() attempts to shrink the active and inactive
lists for each zone in 5 passes.   In the first pass, only the inactive
lists are taken into consideration.   In the next two passes the active
lists are also shrunk, but mapped pages are not reclaimed.   In the last
two passes the active and inactive lists are shrunk and mapped pages are
reclaimed as well. The aim of this is to alter the reclaim logic to choose
the best pages to keep on resume and improve the responsiveness of the
resumed system.

4a3b98a422 [PATCH] swsusp: prevent possible image corruption on resume
The function free_pagedir() used by swsusp for freeing its internal data
structures clears the PG_nosave and PG_nosave_free flags for each page
being freed.

However, during resume PG_nosave_free set means that the page in
question is "unsafe" (ie. it will be overwritten in the process of
restoring the saved system state from the image), so it should not be
used for the image data.

Therefore free_pagedir() should not clear PG_nosave_free if it's called
during resume (otherwise "unsafe" pages freed by it may be used for
storing the image data and the data may get corrupted later on).

6e1819d615 [PATCH] swsusp: userland interface
This patch introduces a user space interface for swsusp.

The interface is based on a special character device, called the snapshot
device, that allows user space processes to perform suspend and resume-related
operations with the help of some ioctls and the read()/write() functions.
Additionally it allows these processes to allocate free swap pages from a
selected swap partition, called the resume partition, so that they know which
sectors of the resume partition are available to them.

The interface uses the same low-level system memory snapshot-handling
functions that are used by the built-it swap-writing/reading code of swsusp.

The interface documentation is included in the patch.

The patch assumes that the major and minor numbers of the snapshot device will
be 10 (ie. misc device) and 231, the registration of which has already been
requested.

f577eb30af [PATCH] swsusp: low level interface
Introduce the low level interface that can be used for handling the
snapshot of the system memory by the in-kernel swap-writing/reading code of
swsusp and the userland interface code (to be introduced shortly).

Also change the way in which swsusp records the allocated swap pages and,
consequently, simplifies the in-kernel swap-writing/reading code (this is
necessary for the userland interface too). To this end, it introduces two
helper functions in mm/swapfile.c, so that the swsusp code does not refer
directly to the swap internals.

277c6e2ad7 [PATCH] swsusp: save image header first
This makes the swsusp_info structure become the header of the image in the
literal sense (ie. it is saved to the swap and read before any other image
data with the help of the swsusp's swap map structure, so generally it is
treated in the same way as the rest of the image).

The main thing it does is to make swsusp_header contain the offset of the swap
map used to track the image data pages rather than the offset of swsusp_info.
Simultaneously, swsusp_info becomes the first image page written to the swap.

The other changes are generally consequences of the above with a few
exceptions (there's some consolidation in the image reading part as a few
functions turn into trivial wrappers around something else).

e5e2fa7857 [PATCH] swsusp: fix enough_free_mem
This patch fixes a problem with the function enough_free_mem() used by
swsusp to verify if there is a sufficient number of memory pages available
to it to create and save the suspend image.

Namely, enough_free_mem() uses nr_free_pages() to obtain the number of free
memory pages, which is incorrect, because this function returns the total
number of free pages, including free highmem pages, and the highmem pages
cannot be used by swsusp for storing the image data.

The patch makes enough_free_mem() avoid counting the free highmem
pages as available to swsusp.

7088a5c001 [PATCH] swsusp: introduce the swap map structure
This patch introduces the swap map structure that can be used by swsusp for
keeping tracks of data pages written to the swap.   The structure itself is
described in a comment within the patch.

The overall idea is to reduce the amount of metadata written to the swap and
to write and read the image pages sequentially, in a file-alike way. This
makes the swap-handling part of swsusp fairly independent of its
snapshot-handling part and will hopefully allow us to completely separate
these two parts in the future.

This patch is needed to remove the suspend image size limit imposed by the
limited size of the swsusp_info structure, which is essential for x86-64
systems with more than 512 MB of RAM.

b5810039a5 [PATCH] core remove PageReserved
Remove PageReserved() calls from core code by tightening VM_RESERVED
handling in mm/ to cover PageReserved functionality.

PageReserved special casing is removed from get_page and put_page.

All setting and clearing of PageReserved is retained, and it is now flagged
in the page_alloc checks to help ensure we don't introduce any refcount
based freeing of Reserved pages.

MAP_PRIVATE, PROT_WRITE of VM_RESERVED regions is tentatively being
deprecated. We never completely handled it correctly anyway, and is be
reintroduced in future if required (Hugh has a proof of concept).

Once PageReserved() calls are removed from kernel/power/swsusp.c, and all
arch/ and driver code, the Set and Clear calls, and the PG_reserved bit can
be trivially removed.

Last real user of PageReserved is swsusp, which uses PageReserved to
determine whether a struct page points to valid memory or not. This still
needs to be addressed (a generic page_is_ram() should work).

A last caveat: the ZERO_PAGE is now refcounted and managed with rmap (and
thus mapcounted and count towards shared rss). These writes to the struct
page could cause excessive cacheline bouncing on big systems. There are a
number of ways this could be addressed if it is an issue.

The following patch makes swsusp avoid the possible temporary corruption
of page translation tables during resume on x86-64. This is achieved by
creating a copy of the relevant page tables that will not be modified by
swsusp and can be safely used by it on resume.

The problem is that during resume on x86-64 swsusp may temporarily
corrupt the page tables used for the direct mapping of RAM. If that
happens, a page fault occurs and cannot be handled properly, which leads
to the solid hang of the affected system. This leads to the loss of the
system's state from before suspend and may result in the loss of data or
the corruption of filesystems, so it is a serious issue. Also, it
appears to happen quite often (for me, as often as 50% of the time).

The problem is related to the fact that (at least) one of the PMD
entries used in the direct memory mapping (starting at PAGE_OFFSET)
points to a page table the physical address of which is much greater
than the physical address of the PMD entry itself. Moreover,
unfortunately, the physical address of the page table before suspend
(i.e. the one stored in the suspend image) happens to be different to
the physical address of the corresponding page table used during resume
(i.e. the one that is valid right before swsusp_arch_resume() in
arch/x86_64/kernel/suspend_asm.S is executed). Thus while the image is
restored, the "offending" PMD entry gets overwritten, so it does not
point to the right physical address any more (i.e. there's no page
table at the address pointed to by it, because it points to the address
the page table has been at during suspend). Consequently, if the PMD
entry is used later on, and it _is_ used in the process of copying the
image pages, a page fault occurs, but it cannot be handled in the normal
way and the system hangs.

In principle we can call create_resume_mapping() from
swsusp_arch_resume() (ie. from suspend_asm.S), but then the memory
allocations in create_resume_mapping(), resume_pud_mapping(), and
resume_pmd_mapping() must be made carefully so that we use _only_
NosaveFree pages in them (the other pages are overwritten by the loop in
swsusp_arch_resume()). Additionally, we are in atomic context at that
time, so we cannot use GFP_KERNEL. Moreover, if one of the allocations
fails, we should free all of the allocated pages, so we need to trace
them somehow.

All of this is done in the appended patch, except that the functions
populating the page tables are located in arch/x86_64/kernel/suspend.c
rather than in init.c. It may be done in a more elegan way in the
future, with the help of some swsusp patches that are in the works now.

The following patch makes swsusp avoid problems during resume if there are

in swsusp_alloc()).

88d10bbaae [PATCH] suspend: cleanup calling of power off methods.
In the lead up to 2.6.13 I fixed a large number of reboot problems by
making the calling conventions consistent. Despite checking and double
checking my work it appears I missed an obvious one.

The S4 suspend code for PM_DISK_PLATFORM was also calling device_shutdown
without setting system_state, and was not calling the appropriate
reboot_notifier.

This patch fixes the bug by replacing the call of device_suspend with
kernel_poweroff_prepare.

Various forms of this failure have been fixed and tracked for a while.

8446f1d391 [PATCH] detect soft lockups
This patch adds a new kernel debug feature: CONFIG_DETECT_SOFTLOCKUP.

When enabled then per-CPU watchdog threads are started, which try to run
once per second. If they get delayed for more than 10 seconds then a
callback from the timer interrupt detects this condition and prints out a
warning message and a stack dump (once per lockup incident). The feature
is otherwise non-intrusive, it doesnt try to unlock the box in any way, it
only gets the debug info out, automatically, and on all CPUs affected by
the lockup.

c2ff18f407 [PATCH] encrypt suspend data for easy wiping
The patch protects from leaking sensitive data after resume from suspend.
During suspend a temporary key is created and this key is used to encrypt the
data written to disk. When, during resume, the data was read back into memory
the temporary key is destroyed which simply means that all data written to
disk during suspend are then inaccessible so they can't be stolen lateron.

Think of the following: you suspend while an application is running that keeps
sensitive data in memory. The application itself prevents the data from being
swapped out. Suspend, however, must write these data to swap to be able to
resume lateron. Without suspend encryption your sensitive data are then
stored in plaintext on disk. This means that after resume your sensitive data
are accessible to all applications having direct access to the swap device
which was used for suspend. If you don't need swap after resume these data
can remain on disk virtually forever. Thus it can happen that your system
gets broken in weeks later and sensitive data which you thought were encrypted
and protected are retrieved and stolen from the swap device.

39c715b717 [PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanup
This patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that
Arjan van de Ven and I came up with.

The previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API
spaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the
usage side.

Some of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the
complexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined
__smp_processor_id.

In the new code, there are two externally visible symbols:

 - smp_processor_id(): debug variant.

 - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing
uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined
by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h.

There is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT:

 - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to
                             smp_processor_id().

Also, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new
lib/smp_processor_id.c file. All related comments got updated and/or
clarified.

I have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86:

 {SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT}

I have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT. (Other
architectures are untested, but should work just fine.)

82428b62aa [PATCH] Driver Core: pm diagnostics update, check for errors
This patch includes various tweaks in the messaging that appears during
system pm state transitions:

  * Warn about certain illegal calls in the device tree, like resuming
child before parent or suspending parent before child. This could
happen easily enough through sysfs, or in some cases when drivers
    use device_pm_set_parent().

  * Be more consistent about dev_dbg() tracing ... do it for resume() and
shutdown() too, and never if the driver doesn't have that method.

  * Say which type of system sleep state is being entered.

Except for the warnings, these only affect debug messaging.

4dc3b16ba1 [PATCH] DocBook: changes and extensions to the kernel documentation
I have recompiled Linux kernel 2.6.11.5 documentation for me and our
university students again. The documentation could be extended for more
sources which are equipped by structured comments for recent 2.6 kernels. I
have tried to proceed with that task. I have done that more times from 2.6.0
time and it gets boring to do same changes again and again. Linux kernel
compiles after changes for i386 and ARM targets. I have added references to
some more files into kernel-api book, I have added some section names as well.
So please, check that changes do not break something and that categories are
not too much skewed.

I have changed kernel-doc to accept "fastcall" and "asmlinkage" words reserved
by kernel convention. Most of the other changes are modifications in the
comments to make kernel-doc happy, accept some parameters description and do
not bail out on errors. Changed <pid> to @pid in the description, moved some
#ifdef before comments to correct function to comments bindings, etc.

You can see result of the modified documentation build at
  http://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/~pisa/linux/lkdb-2.6.11.tar.gz

Some more sources are ready to be included into kernel-doc generated
documentation. Sources has been added into kernel-api for now. Some more
section names added and probably some more chaos introduced as result of quick
cleanup work.

1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
